What is a certified translation?

A certified translation is different to both an official translation and an apostilled translation.

This is one of the easier translations to obtain. A certified translation only requires that the person who translated the document certifies that it is a true and faithful translation of the original. In Bogotá, Colombia, I have been regularly asked to provide certified translations, particularly for clients undertaking visa or scholarship applications for migration or study in the USA and Europe.

A certified translation does not need to be done by someone with a qualification or any sort of certificate. The translator just needs to have a command of both languages (the original and the target language).

¿Qué es una traducción certificada?

Una traducción certificada es diferente de una traducción oficial y de una traducción apostillada.

Es una de las traducciones más fáciles de obtener. Una traducción certificada sólo requiere que la persona que tradujo el documento certifique que es una traducción fiel y exacta del original. En Bogotá, Colombia, me han solicitado con frecuencia traducciones certificada, en particular para clientes que tramitan visas o solicitudes de becas para migrar o estudiar en Estados Unidos y Europa.

Una traducción jurada no necesita que la haga alguien con una cualificación o algún tipo de certificado. Basta con que el traductor domine los dos idiomas (el original y el de destino).

Un cuadro de texto es una solución fácil

Una de las formas más sencillas de certificar una traducción es colocar un cuadro de texto en el documento como el que se muestra a continuación:

Portable or the booth? A guide for hiring interpreting equipment

If you haven’t organized an interpreting job before, it might be a little tricky to know what you need to hire in terms of equipment. In Bogotá and the rest of Colombia, we get such a variety of jobs that sometimes we hire out different types of equipment for use in a single day. Below is a basic guide to interpreting equipment so that, depending on your event, you can identify what you need to hire.

Interpreting booth

An interpreting booth is the most commonly used equipment for events requiring interpretation. It has space for two interpreters to sit side by side and a glass window so that they can see who is speaking at the event. It is accompanied by a console, wireless microphones and however many headsets are required. The booth and other equipment are installed and monitored during the event by a technician, who is there to rapidly resolve any technical issues that might arise. The following types of events require an interpreting booth:

Large-scale (between 10 and 1,000 attendees)
Indoors
Usually one location (maximum two) during the day
Held in a relatively large meeting room, hotel or auditorium.
Meeting, conference, workshop or other formal-type event.

Portable equipment

Portable interpreting equipment consists of a transmitter (small microphone) and headsets (wired headphones with receivers that fit in a person’s pocket or can be clipped on their waistband). Portable equipment is used for events with the following characteristics:

Small scale (between 1 and 20 people)
Outdoors
Indoors in very small spaces that won’t fit a booth
Multiple locations
Field visits, cultural events, outdoor meetings, car trips and other informal activities

It’s also possible to use both types of equipment for a single event, depending on what is going to happen. The most important thing is to ensure that everybody is comfortable, the interpreters can do their job effectively and that communication flows between those involved in the event.

Si no has organizado un trabajo de interpretación antes, puede resultar un poco complicado saber qué necesitas contratar en cuanto a equipos. En Bogotá y en el resto de Colombia, tenemos tal variedad de trabajos en los que a veces alquilamos diferentes tipos de equipos para usar en un mismo día. A continuación, encontrará una guía básica de equipos de interpretación para que, dependiendo de su evento, pueda identificar lo que necesita contratar.

Cabina de interpretación

Una cabina de interpretación es el equipo más utilizado en las actividades que requieren interpretación. Tiene espacio para que dos intérpretes se sienten uno al lado del otro y una ventana de cristal para que puedan ver quién habla en el acto. Va acompañada de una consola, micrófonos inalámbricos y tantos auriculares como sean necesarios. La cabina y el resto del equipo son instalados y supervisados durante el acto por un técnico, que está allí para resolver rápidamente cualquier problema técnico que pueda surgir. Los siguientes tipos de actividades requieren una cabina de interpretación:

A gran escala (entre 10 y 1.000 asistentes)
En interiores
Normalmente un lugar (máximo dos) durante el día
Se celebra en una sala de reuniones relativamente grande, en un hotel o en un auditorio.
Reunión, conferencia, taller u otro acto de tipo formal.

Equipos portátiles

Los equipos portátiles de interpretación constan de un transmisor (pequeño micrófono) y unos auriculares (auriculares con cable y receptores que caben en el bolsillo de una persona o pueden engancharse a su cintura). Los equipos portátiles se utilizan en actos con las siguientes características:

Pequeña escala (entre 1 y 20 personas)
Al aire libre
En interiores, en espacios muy reducidos en los que no cabe una cabina
Diferentes locaciones
Visitas de campo, actos culturales, reuniones al aire libre, viajes en carro y otras actividades informales

También es posible utilizar ambos tipos de equipos en un mismo acto, dependiendo de lo que vaya a ocurrir. Lo más importante es que todo el mundo esté cómodo, que los intérpretes puedan hacer su trabajo con eficacia y que la comunicación fluya entre los participantes en el acto.

Best platform for an online meeting that requires interpreting

If it’s your first time organising interpreting for an online meeting in Colombia or any other country in the world, it can be a little difficult to know which platform you should use. Below is a quick guide to help you with your choice.

Zoom Pro

We have a winner! Zoom Pro is the only platform that allows you to have simultaneous interpreting. This means that you can turn on the Interpreting function, and when somebody is speaking in Spanish, people attending the meeting can select the English button and here the interpreter speaking in English at the same time. This reduces the length of the meeting, improves communication and makes the session much more enjoyable for everyone. While Zoom Pro has a significant annual subscription fee, you can also rent it for a day or numerous days from ONG Traducciones.

Microsoft Teams

Due to its popularity with organisations and businesses, many online meetings are held using Teams. However, the Teams interpreting function is currently only one-way. This means that there is a function for interpreting from the speaker’s language into another language but if that person wishes to respond to the speaker, there is no second channel to facilitate that conversation. As a result, Teams is not advisable for an online meeting that requires interpreting.

Google Meet

Because this is a free platform, Google Meet does not have an interpreting function and consecutive interpreting is required. This involves someone talking for around a minute in their language, then the interpreter repeats what they said in the other language, etc. As a result, the online meeting will go for at least double the amount of time and the interpreting will be less accurate as it relies heavily on the memory of the interpreter.

La mejor plataforma para una reunión en línea que requiere servicio de traducción simultánea

Si es la primera vez que organiza la traducción simultánea para una reunión en línea en Colombia o cualquier otro país del mundo, puede resultar un poco difícil saber qué plataforma debe utilizar. A continuación, encontrará una guía rápida que le ayudará a elegir.

Zoom Pro

¡Tenemos un ganador! Zoom Pro es la única plataforma que permite la traducción simultánea. Esto significa que puedes activar la función de interpretación y, cuando alguien está hablando en español, los asistentes a la reunión pueden seleccionar el botón de inglés y escuchar al intérprete hablando en inglés al mismo tiempo. Esto reduce la duración de la reunión, mejora la comunicación y hace que la sesión sea mucho más agradable para todos. Aunque Zoom Pro tiene costo alto para la suscripción anual, también se puede alquilar por un día o varios días con ONG Traducciones.

Microsoft Teams

Debido a su popularidad entre organizaciones y empresas, muchas reuniones en línea se hacen con Teams. Sin embargo, la función de traducción simultánea de Teams es unidireccional. Esto significa que existe una función para interpretar del idioma de la persona hablando a otro idioma, pero si el oyente desea responder, no hay un segundo canal que facilite esa conversación. Como resultado, Teams no es aconsejable para una reunión en línea que requiera interpretación.

Google Meet

Al tratarse de una plataforma gratuita, Google Meet no dispone de función de interpretación y se requiere interpretación consecutiva. Esto significa que hay que recurrir a la interpretación consecutiva, que consiste en que alguien habla durante un minuto en su idioma, luego el intérprete repite lo que ha dicho en el otro idioma, etc. Como resultado, la reunión en línea durará al menos el doble de tiempo y la interpretación será menos precisa, ya que depende en gran medida de la memoria del intérprete
